Thought I’d share an interesting interpretation on this passage that was given to me during prayer.
23. And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24. And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
25. And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
26. How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27. And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Notice here how the disciples plucked the ears of the corn. Common interpretation of this passage, would have that action to be the sin of the Sabbath. Nobody should work the land on the Sabbath. However, the field did not belong to them. Therefore, if the sin involved plucking, would the sin not be
theft, rather than
work on the Sabbath? Indeed it appears that the problem here is
eating of the corn, rather than plucking it. Jesus answers with David’s act of
eating that which is illegal.
Eating on the Sabbath, a sin? According to pharisaical law, there are only two occasions when fasting is permitted on the Sabbath
1.) If the Torah Scroll was dropped. This is evidently not the case, as they were passing through the fields.
2.) If the Sabbath was a High Sabbath, that of the Day of Atonement (Lev 23:26-32).
Traditionally, the Day of Atonement is considered the day whereupon the final judgment will occur. Therefore, people fast and repent, exceedingly on that day.
So if the accusation was against eating on the Sabbath, then Jesus rightly answered, with regard to this Sabbath of Atonement and Judgement (2:27)
And he said unto them, The [Judgment] was made for man, and not man for the [Judgment]: (28) Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the [Judgement].
If this is the take-home message, it fits in perfectly with the context of this passage: 2:19-20
And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. (20) But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
And also with regards to His purpose on this earth: 3:4
And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
